I am serious! I do not smoke but have been using worry beads for some time to help me with my anxiety and depression. How they work is to give me a distraction from my nerves. To give up smoking does take will power, might need nicotine replacements but it also needs two other things; a distraction from the craving and something to do with your fingers. Worry beads can do both of these two things, and surprisingly well.
This is my recommendation on how to get the most from worry beads. You will need two sets; a full set, which the Greeks call a Komboloi, but at The English Worry Bead Co. we call then a 1Pear and a Greek Begleri or mini set of worry beads that we call a 2Pear. Each set of worry beads has a distinct purpose.
The 1Pear has a hand turned English hard wood pear with 23 or more stones. The stones can be fiddled with whilst doing something else. Perfect for watching the TV or whilst chatting to friends out for the evening. What they do is keep your hands occupied when they would normally be holding a cigarette. They are effectively keeping you distracted, before a craving starts.
OK in an ideal world the 1Pear would stop cravings from starting but we have to be realistic. When you start to crave a cigarette that is when you change to a 2Pear. These are great for doing simple or even complex ones once you get the hang of them. There are lots of demonstrations on YouTube, but I found that if you just play with them, you can work out your own tricks. A good start point is to hang one pear between your little and ring finger with the pear in the palm of your hand. Swing the other two and fro until you can balance it on either side of your hand. Then you can try and catch the pear using your index finger and thumb. YouTube is the place to see this done. Once you have mastered it you can show off to everyone! How the 2Pear works is to make you concentrate on getting them to do a trick for you. They are quite addictive and if you can get a friend to learn tricks at the same time as you, quite competitive. By using the 2Pear when you have a craving you are completely distracted until the craving goes.
As I said earlier you will still need will power but I challenge any smoker to use worry beads and give up smoking. You do not have to buy from The English Worry Bead Co. but of course I would like you too. After you have looked on the internet to see what other worry beads are available I hope you will see that ours are what you would like to use and be seen with. Unfortunately if you are going to make a go of giving up smoking you will need to carry the worry beads with you all the time, they will be your replacement for a pack of cigarettes.
If you want to give up smoking or have tried with worry beads please share your experience.
